Greece has carried its own healing and ritual culture for millennia. Self care was never a trend here, it was always a way of healing.
When I was a teenager, my world collapsed after my mother became seriously ill. During that time, my parents sent me to Greece to stay with my grandmother. I remember she took me to the Faneromeni monastery here on the Island, where we lit beeswax candles and sat quietly beneath the scent of incense and ancient herbs. And prayed. What many don’t know: there are countless holy saints in Greek Orthodoxy. Many were simple men and women, living quietly in monasteries, listening to what came through them. They channeled their own truths. And their own healing scents, incense blends - their own healing remedies. Each a unique dialogue with god, the soul, the universe. This is true self-empowerment – to sanctify your own path by trusting your soul’s voice. And that is holy. To me it is proof that everything is ONE. Once you are deeply connected with your essence, God, the universe, the great source is speaking through you. And this is you. This is the remembrance of the roots.
Something opened back then within me in that monastery. And healing happened. Those moments stayed with me. The scent of beeswax candles, warm stone walls and sacred smoke became engraved in my memory carried silently within me for nearly twenty years. Healing happened.
Recently, I met a man in Athens who carries the very same icon of the monastery where I once prayed for my mother. He explained to me the deeper meaning behind the scents I had inhaled as a teenager – why rose opens the heart, why frankincense reaches the higher spirit, why myrrh grounds and heals. He carries the ancient knowledge of the monks and saints and with him, the special incense blends of NECTÅÅR are being created. Each blend carries deep meaning and intention – not just aroma, but frequency.
Today I feel ready to return to these sacred roots and translate the energy and making it accessable for the world. And this became NECTÅÅR.
A modern Mediterranean ritual house honoring ancient Greek apothecary traditions, sacred bathing culture and the sensory rituals passed through generations across Greece. Our candles are made from 100% beeswax, as they have been used in Greek churches and monasteries for centuries. Our incense blends are developed together with people who still carry the ancient knowledge of herbs, resins and ritual scent-making across Greece.
Today, my mother is healthier than ever. In a quiet full-circle moment, she now helps ship part of our NECTÅÅR collection from our Berlin stock, while the rest leaves from the Ionian Islands of Greece.
